On Thursday July 19, CGAA instructor Sylvia Chan was featured as one of two speakers for the HUB Host Show at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Selected based on her work in art and social entrepreneurship, she shared her stories, experiences, and guidance along with Aver Bayon-on and Luki Danukarjanto.
Here are some of the highlights of the night:
What impresses you?
S: I’m impressed and inspired by the number of my students who are interested in entrepreneurship and creating their own companies to make a difference for others in the community. I think that’s big for me, being able to make a difference for someone else.
How do you stay motivated when you have no one to be accountable to?
S: As a business owner, I am 100% responsible for anything that happens. I make sure I am on top of things so clients, parents, and the people I work with have the best service and feel like they’re well taken care of. It’s easy because I love what I do. I enjoy mentoring young people in the arts and helping people foster their creative side. I find immense pleasure in the things I do, the people I interact with, and the people I work with. Also, I believe in doing the things you say you will do. I think having a voice is important, and doing the things you say you will do.
Why is giving back to the community important to you?
S: I have and continue still to volunteer at community-based organizations, such as Paint A Smile and Power Unit Youth Organization. This quote sums up why I believe in giving back to the community: “Community is a rent we pay for living”. I believe in contributing back to the community and getting involved
What do you want your legacy to be? What impact do you hope to have on art? Teaching?
S: I want to help people believe they are artists and create a life they love. I love helping people around me, no matter who is it, in their own personal growth, self-belief, and confidence in achieving their fullest potential. I would like to be remembered as someone that loves the arts and helped others be their truest self, in their highest self-expression.
